A Court Of Silver Flames Summary

At the start of the novel, Nesta is still grappling with the aftermath of traumatic events from the previous installment. She was forcibly transformed from human to Fae, and as a result, acquired supernatural powers from the magical Cauldron. Presently, Nesta is consumed with self-hatred and blames herself for the inability to rescue her sister from the same fate or to prevent her father’s murder by the King of Hybern. Deep down, she feels undeserving of love and tends to push away anyone who tries to reach out to her.

Nesta becomes the object of a family intervention after following a self-destructive lifestyle of gambling, drinking and one-night encounters. She is summoned to the House of Wind, which is positioned high over the city. Nesta is effectively imprisoned because the only way to reach the world below is through a 10,000-step spiral staircase.

During her stay at the house, Nesta is required to train physically with Cassian, a skilled military leader and battle-tested veteran of the Court of Night. Their initial interactions are difficult, but Cassian eventually persuades Nesta to commit to a consistent training schedule. Despite her attempts to flee down the stairs, Nesta’s lack of physical fitness always proves to be a hindrance, forcing her to abandon her escape plans.

In the house resides a sanctuary for priestesses who were victims of physical abuse during the war with Hybern. They seek refuge in the court library to pursue their studies without disturbance. Nesta is expected to assist them in the library every afternoon where she befriends the young priestess named Gwyn. Gwyn teaches Nesta about battle tactics and the mind-quieting techniques of the legendary Valkyries, who were revered female warriors that perished in a battle 500 years ago. Inspired by the Valkyries, Nesta and Gwyn aspire to revive their practices and request Cassian to train them Valkyrie-style. They are joined by Emerie, a shopkeeper who lives amongst the misogynistic Illyrian race of male warriors. Her goal is to take charge of her life.

Over the course of her training, Nesta develops a deep connection with Gwyn, Emerie, the sentient House of Wind, and Cassian. Despite being forced to participate in the Illyrian Blood Rite to prove that women are inferior to men, she and her friends emerge victorious against all odds.
