The novel opens with Auburn Reed, a young woman attempting to rebuild her life after losing her young son, in Dallas, Texas. Working two jobs to pay her rent and other expenses, Auburn is having a hard time making ends meet. Also, she is attempting to get custody of her kid back from his grandma.

One day, when Auburn passes by the “Confess” art studio, she meets Owen Gentry, the owner. Owen is a struggling artist who draws his inspiration for his paintings from confessions made by unnamed people. Owen appeals to Auburn right away, and the two start talking. Auburn accepts Owen’s offer of a position in his studio.

Auburn starts to feel attracted to Owen as she spends more time with him. Nevertheless, Owen has been holding a secret from her. He is the one to blame for her son’s passing, but he has never admitted it. Because of what happened to Auburn’s kid, Owen feels guilty and ashamed and is unwilling to pursue a relationship with her.

As their connection deepens, secrets between Auburn and Owen are revealed, requiring them to face their pasts and make difficult decisions about their futures. As her ex-boyfriend reappears in her life and tries to win her back, Auburn is divided between her devotion to him and her love for Owen. While dealing with the fallout from a horrible event in his past, Owen is also battling to keep his gallery running.
